Happy Birthday Giovanna!

I absolutely cannot believe how fast the past two years have gone by. Our baby Giovanna is 2 years old. Happy Birthday (well yesterday) Giovanna. I wish you continue to be as fun, smart, happy, and beautiful as you have been your entire little life. To celebrate Giovanna's birthday, it worked out well that Joe's regular day off is Wednesday. I also took the day off of work. We took the girls to get Giovanna's 2 year and Giuliana's 6 month pictures. Then, Gunnar had a scrimmage football game, so we went to watch him play. They won! After a quick "shwench shwies" drive through McDonald's dinner (Giovanna's choice), we met my parents at our house for cake and presents to wind down the day.

Today we had a two for one deal! Both girls see the same pediatrician, whom we absolutely love. Their doctor is so happy with both girls' development. She was surprised at Giovanna's extended vocabulary and good behavior. And she was especially impressed with Giuliana's development. Despite her underlying issues, the doctor said Giuliana is behaving as a 9 month old! She even asked if we are counting the months correctly! She said Giuliana's level of engagement, babbling, and physical capabilities is outstanding. It is such a relief and joy to hear those words come out of her mouth. Both girls are right on target for their height and weight, hugging the 50th percentile line.

It's amazing. Giuliana is crawling all over the house.
It may take her awhile to get from point A to point B,
but she is getting everywhere and anywhere she pleases!

We were singing Happy Birthday to Giovanna.

For her "finale" present, we took her out to the backyard,
and had the garage door slowly rise. . .

Finger Painting!

We dabbled with finger paints this week! It took Giovanna a few minutes to get used to the idea of painting with her hands. In the beginning she would only use her finger, but then mommy took her hands and dove in to the paints and then she loved it! She kept saying, "more color mommy, more color." We had a great time! This weekend we celebrated the family's September birthdays. The weather was on the cool side, but we managed to have a great bbq. Those pictures are on another camera, so I'll have to post them another time. I can't believe Giovanna is going to be 2.

Giuliana's hair fits in pigtails now! Love it!

This evening the girls and I spent some time outside.
I got some really cute pictures.

Too bad they never look at the camera at the same time

Giuliana's AFP Levels Are Dropping

On Saturday we took Giuliana for her AFP blood test. Old McDonald is her favorite song, so I sang to her and she sucked away on her binks while the nurses drew her blood. Not a single flinch, cry, or tear. She's a champ. I tell her every time, when she's old enough, Mommy and Daddy will take her for ice cream, or french fries, or whatever she wants after her blood tests. We got the results this afternoon, and her AFP levels continue to drop. Last time it was 43, today it was 28! Again, this is a good thing. We want those levels to continue to go down.

As promised, Giuliana's bathtub hair photo!

Now Giuliana is trying to push herself up to a sitting
position. She makes a "sexy pose" but the camera didn't
click fast enough. I still like the picture that came out, so
wanted to share.

We've Had Some Time To Breathe!

Whew! We've actually had a slow couple of weeks. They almost seem normal, no doctor's appointments! We had Gunnar almost all week last week, so we took another family trip up to Magic Waters since we had such a nice time last time. Of course, it was hectic getting out the door, so we both forgot to pack the camera. Next year. Below are just a couple of cute recent pictures. Tomorrow we take Giuliana for another one of her 6 week AFP blood tests, so we'll have an update as soon as we get the results.
Giovanna got this hat from her babysitter and she loves
to wear it, as well as her backpack. She looks like she's
ready to head to school. It still breaks my heart to see her
black eye. Luckily it is all healed now.

I know I'm a dork and dress the girls alike, but I think it's
sooo cute. And, I have to while I can. Soon enough they're
going to tell me "No mommy." I can just hear it already.

Sooooo Close To Crawling!!!

OMG! Giuliana is sooooo close to crawling! Here is a video I took tonight.

Mommy & Me Swimming

Sorry it's been awhile since I've posted. We've had a busy week. I was in Las Vegas for work last week, and we had a crazy weekend. So, Giovanna and I took our Mommy & Me swim class again this summer, and we had a blast. (I can't wait for next summer when Giuliana can come too) It was extra fun this year because our friends Sarah & Isabella were in our class. Giovanna goes underwater now! Well, when mommy makes her.

Giovanna doing "Rocketship." We count down from 5
and when we get to 1, we BLASTOFF!

This year the instructors brought out the slide every class.
Giovanna and Isabella loved this part of the class. Although
the last class, Giovanna was not happy with me because
I had her go under water when she got to the bottom of the slide.

After we sing our songs, rocketship, and practice swimming on
tummies and floating on backs, we go to the kiddie pool where
the kids get to play with different toys. Giovanna loves the ducks!

Here Giovanna received her certificate of completion.
It was so cute watching her go up and claim her "trophy"

It was difficult being away from the family last week. I was so happy to come home. Friday evening the girls and I went for a walk. Giovanna was being lovey with Giuliana. It was too adorable. Giovanna was giving Giuliana kisses, and holding her hand. It was such a great evening.

After our walk, it was bath time. I love bath time. Giovanna has so much fun playing with bubbles and all the toys. We even make colored baths with special tablets that color the water. I took this picture to show Giovanna her hair, and she thought it was the funniest thing. Unfortunately, the camera's battery died before I could take Giuliana's mohawk picture. She was too cute too.
After both girls had their baths, we started our nighttime routine. Giuliana has her nigh-night bottle, Giovanna takes her vitamin and brushes her teeth, then we read a few stories, and it's off to bed for the girls. Unfortunately, Friday night took an unfortunate turn of events. While I was putting Giuliana in her crib and getting her hooked up to her home pulse oximeter, Giovanna decided to stop reading. I heard her exclaim, "JUMPEROO!" (or Junkeroo as she says) I heard fumble fumble CRASH, SCREAM, CRY. I ran out to the livingroom and swooped her up from underneath the jumperoo. She was screaming the loudest and most passionate that I've ever heard. I asked her where she bumped herself, and she pointed to her forehead. Needing better light I took her in to the kitchen to check her forehead (which was untouched by the way) and noticed her eye. It was black and blue and the swellilng was pretty intense. Thank God Vicki lives so close, and she was willing to come over and stay with Giuliana. I called the doctor's office and spoke with a nurse on call who advised that I take Giovanna to the ER. Giovanna is ok. They almost took xrays, but the second doctor who came in to see her said, "I was expecting a horrible black eye. This is not bad, it just needs to be cleaned. She'll be ok." I was so relieved our baby girl is ok. We did take a picture the next day, but it breaks my heart to see her injured, so I do not have the energy to post the picture. Each day the swelling comes down, and the bruise is slowly fading. When Joe came home from work, we decided to put the jumperoo away. The first thing Giovanna asked for the next morning was the jumperoo. Since then, we have decided to bring it back up for Giuliana to play in, and we are teaching Giovanna that she is too big to play with the jumperoo. So far, it's going well.

NICU Follow-up

This morning Giuliana had her, what we now know is the first of many, NICU Follow-up. We didn't know what to expect, but when I checked in we discovered this is a 2-3 hour appointment. First they performed a hearing test on her. This is a different hearing test from the newborn hearing test (which she passed). They put a probe in each ear which sent a tone to her inner ear. When the inner ear receives the tone it vibrates sending a message back to the machine that she heard the tone. Giuliana passed in both ears.

After approximately 15 minutes of waiting, we were seen by a Speech Therapist. Since Giuliana is so young, plus we have a Speech Therapist come to the house through EI, there wasn't much done at this appointment. After a long wait, we then saw an Occupational Therapist. She was very friendly and came to check Giuliana's movements. The Occupational Therapist was pleasantly surprised with Giuliana's level. Giuliana scored in the 75-90th percentile on this test. She called Giuliana a Rockstar! You'll see in the video below, Giuliana is sooooooo close to crawling, which puts her way ahead of where she's supposed to be. Most babies start to crawl around 8-9 months. While Giuliana is advanced for her age in milestones, we do need to work on some excercises at home. She tends to be a little stiff at times, so we just need to do a few excercises throughout the day to keep her loose and "chill."

Then after another long wait, we saw a Fellow. I'm not really sure exactly what a Fellow is, so I'm going to have to do some research on that one. I think he is a doctor because he mentioned that he was a Pediatrician before he became a Fellow. He pretty much talked to us to see where we are with things, address any of our concerns, and then did a brief examination of Giuliana. He then reported to his supervisor, and she came in to recap everything for us and examine Giuliana herself. So, we were there the 3 hours and this doctor told us we will be back every 4 months until she is 14 months, then at 2 years, and 3 years. I'm not sure if there are any visits between the 2 and 3 years because by this point both Giuliana and Giovanna were screaming their heads off, so it was difficult to hear. I figured between Joe and I, we'd caught the entire conversation. When we got back to the car, I asked Joe if he caught the whole how many times we come back conversation, and he missed it just like I did! Oh well, we have our next appointment scheduled (which we need a referral for!!!) so we're good for now and know we have many more visits to come.

Yesterday we took the kids to Magic Waters. Giuliana loved the Lazy River, Giovanna did not. The part where water squirts out at you, Giovanna would scream her head off all the way through. Then she'd look at Giuliana and say, "baby wet," and see she wasn't crying and then she'd stop crying. That is until we got close to the next section of water squirting! She really enjoyed the kiddie area though. Giovanna even made a friend at the end. Gunnar had a blast on the waterslides. We had a really fun family day.

On Monday night, Giuliana started these phenominal moves! This morning she even got up on her knees! She is on her way to crawling. I can't help but be excited at her accomplishment, but at the same time mommy sad that she's growing up so fast before my eyes.

4 Month Check-up

This week Giuliana had her 4 month pediatrician visit. She is weighing in at 14lbs 2.4 oz and 23 1/2" long. Just when I start to forget that she is a special needs baby, it all comes crashing back. At this appointment, Giuliana's doctor noticed that her right leg is about a half of a centimeter longer than her left leg. Hemihypertrophy/Hemihyperplasia (people just say Hemi) is a characteristic of Beckwith-Wiedemann Syndrome. This is where one side of the body, or one part of the body is enlarged. It can be in length and/or girth. Her doctor didn't exactly call it Hemi, but the more I look at her legs, the more I see the difference. If you'd like to learn more about Hemi, someone on my BWS group emailed a link http://www.hemisupport.com/. The doctor said we'll just watch it for now. We are also in the process of getting a referral for Giuliana's sleep study, as well as a swallow study.

Giuliana being cute with her 80's Rocker hair

Giuliana will now join us at the dinner table. Even though
she is not eating solids yet, we decided to have her get used
to sitting in the highchair, and to include her with mealtimes.
Giovanna has been upgraded to a seat at the dinner table!
Tonight was her first meal sitting in her "Big Girl" chair, and
she did really well. The mess was minimal too!

Now That's Commitment!

While eating dinner tonight, I can't believe I got the camera fast enough for this one! It took all my energy to not laugh in order to keep the camera still. She must have had a hard day of playing today. The video speaks for itself!

Nevus Sebaceous

This was an extremely busy weekend for the Lees. Giuliana had an appointment with the dermatologist on Saturday. She was born with a tiny bald spot on the right side of her head. The dermatologist confirmed it is a Nevus Sebaceous. It is a tiny round spot that is slightly raised and sounds like it is an overgrowth of sebaceous glands. He said it is nothing for us to worry about right now, but when she is around 8-10 years old, she will have to have it removed because it can become cancerous. Again the dreaded CANCER word. That is always hard to hear and I think the doctor sensed our fear and reassured us that it should be ok for now. The area should grow proportionately as she grows. We are to keep an eye on it and contact him if we see any changes, otherwise come back in 8 years. With a new referral of course. Anyone else have to deal with referrals? Did you catch my attempt to be funny?

Gunnar also had a playoff game. His baseball team is in 1st place. This is the first time he is on a winning team! They played the 8th place team and won 17-0.

Giuliana's Speech Therapist also came for the first time. She is really nice and said that Joe and I are doing exactly what we are supposed to be doing to ensure Giuliana is developing on target. She gave us some exercises to do with Giuliana to strengthen her lips and make her aware of her cheeks, lips, and tongue.

We were at a picnic on Sunday, and it was really cute, Gunnar
and Giovanna were playing cornhole together. It was soooooo
hot. The poor girls were a hot mess!

Despite the torturing weather, Giuliana was able to keep
smiling! I love when she smiles. She smiles with her entire face!

Gunnar's new thing is building a house of cards. He took
a picture of the most cards he has ever stacked in the
one day that he started building! We are proud of his masterpiece.
